Community Involvement

What is happening in your community? It could be a multitude of things. In today’s fast paced world, it’s nearly impossible to keep up. Soon, an individual is overwhelmed with local issues which they did not have any knowledge of. So, how do we stay informed and help those that need it?

First, connecting with neighbors and people in our surrounding areas will help. This is sometimes complicated because many people live alone, don’t have the ability to walk around or drive, and others may not live “near” their neighbors. It’s important to reach out and check-in with those that do not have any family, friends, or resources; this is an integral aspect of a community…acknowledging this happens and addressing it. Even if it means connecting with only one new community member in need, it’s a valuable relationship for each.

Second, putting in extra effort to stay on top of local government will benefit you, and those around you, in the long run. This means reading the newspaper, searching online for your county/township/village’s website for meetings and agendas, and watching the news channel. Sometimes it requires reading the fine print and digging a little deeper than you anticipated. Not all issues are blaring in your face…they are hidden.

Third, find reliable sources (neighbors, news, etc.) to keep you updated. As mentioned above, if you can only connect with one individual, that may be enough. Try attending government meetings on various levels---you’re not obligated to speak, just sit and listen. If you do want to share stories, ideas, and news with someone, many communities accommodate all kinds of groups and interests. For example, public libraries offer a host of activities, and churches of all religions have many services and programs. More organizations to consider: schools, colleges, hospitals, public sports complexes, public pools, senior centers, museums, cultural centers, park districts, and your local city hall. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

While most of these suggestions might seem easy enough, the fact is that it’s not that simple for some community members. There are voices unheard and they need to be discovered. As a community it’s everyone’s responsibility to share their assets and ensure an improved quality of life for everyone. By helping others, you are helping yourself---start by engaging within your community, staying focused, and building relationships.
